Art by Heather Crisp

Artist Statement

Humans surround themselves with treasured objects. Collected, inherited, gifted or just acquired. My current works celebrate and honour these objects whether they be precious family heirlooms or op shop finds.

I am fascinated by why I am drawn to these objects and how they occupy and inhabit my home. Some are revered, others are simply vessels in which to display flowers and foliage from my garden. A love of old textiles has inspired me to incorporate fabrics, weaving and laces into my arrangements.

I apply acrylic paints, layering and texturing to create surfaces against which the components of my design are arranged. A process of adding intricate layers of colour, pattern and detail to the surface follows. Plants, flowers and birds often appear in my paintings. Leadlight windows form an important element in my designs allowing me to explore light and shadows cast by the objects depicted.

Painting allows me to express my love of simple objects and the memories of people and events they evoke.
